In 2006, over 4,900 people were killed and over 106,000 were injured in accidents involving large truck crashes. A large truck is defined as commercial vehicles weighing over 5 tons (or 10,000lbs).
"Because of their size, weight, and the amount of travel, large trucks play a major role in both the
occurrence and consequences of traffic crashes. Large trucks account for about 3 percent of motor vehicles
involved in police-reported crashes of all severities, about 8 percent of vehicles in total fatal crashes, and
are associated with about 12 percent of the annual total traffic fatality count. Large trucks are also
estimated to account for about 7 percent of the total number of vehicle miles traveled each year."
